The World Health Organisation’s Global Status Report on Road Safety(2018) estimated that more than 7,000 people lost their lives on Ghana’s roads in 2016. With a significant number of people also suffering injury and disability, this presents a significant burden for an already stretched public health service and has a substantial impact on the country’s growth.
Moreover, Ghana’s development priorities include aspirations to establish the country as a regional transportation hub while ensuring sustainable and safe practices within the transport industry. This means that heavy goods traffic is expected to increase in coming years and that there is an urgent need to upskill drivers to ensure a qualified and experienced workforce able to safely meet the growing demand.

Puma Energy Foundation supports the international organisation Transaid to implement a new professional driver-training programme in Ghana. The project aims to raise national minimum standards for heavy goods vehicle (HGV) driver training, with the aim of reducing road traffic fatalities and injuries in the country.

The programme will develop an enhanced driver training curriculum specific to HGV drivers, and advocate for its adoption at a national level by the Ghanaian government to ensure consistency of training standards across the country with the aim of saving lives.

Thanks to Transaid’s “training of trainers model”, the quality professional driver training will also improve access to jobs for Ghanaians and drive economic growth, while ensuring the development of a safer transport sector.

Transaid has significant experience in developing HGV driver training standards at a national and regional level. The organisation has been working to improve the driving standards of 50,000 commercial vehicle drivers across Zambia, Tanzania and Uganda since 2008 and has already carried out a feasibility study in 2019 to assess the status of HGV driver training in Ghana.

The organisation identified Ghana-based partners to work with to maximise the quality of delivery and ensures that the proposed interventions are implemented in the most appropriate, sustainable and impactful way in the country.
